Thaw is a Scottish woodland scene painted from reference photograph. A path meanders through the snowy scene, where thawing snow illuminates the trail while tree branches reveal their graceful transformation from winter to spring. I love trying to get a feeling of distance in painting woodland scenes so that the viewer can imagine themselves walking there.

I have had a lifelong interest in art, following in the footsteps of my father Robert Gould. My dad painted in oils for most of his life, culminating in his own studio gallery in Houston, Scotland. He taught me a lot of his techniques over the years… but I am always working on my own style.
I am colour blind… which I believe has helped my practice in a couple of ways. Firstly it makes me focus on colour theory when creating my work. Secondly, when I get it wrong it can sometimes create interesting effects that are perhaps a little unexpected (or so I’m told).
I am a proud dad now myself… My little boy was born in January 2021.
Hopefully showcasing my work and that of my dad here will make him proud. I want to teach him that if you find a talent and something you love to do you should share it and let it grow as much as you can.
I find that the best photos for painting are taken with soft lighting from one side, for example sitting next to a window or outside on a bright day.
Photographs that tend not to work well are usually poorly lit, too far away or blurred. I also don’t work from black and white images.
I will often change the background to compliment or contrast with the subject in a loose style.
